Skin Care for Atopic Dermatitis
(Eczema)
1. Baths
should be taken once a day for 20 to 30 minutes. Put
unscented oil in bath water (Lubath, Alpha-Keri, Neutrogena,
etc.) Apply ointment and lotion immediately after the
bath (prescriptions given by your doctor, or Aquaphor, Nivea
cream, Bag Balm, Eucerin, Aveeno, etc.) to moisten the
skin. The baths and ointment may be increased to twice
a day if the condition worsens.
a. If
you don't like baths, shower and use an unscented liquid
soap; apply creams after the shower.
2. Use
wet wraps (damp gauze soaked in warm water) after baths for
severe flares that are not responding to the above measures.
3. Use
Vanicream or similar creams to mild areas twice a day.
Aquaphor lotion may be used for very dry spots.
4. Take
antihistamines daily if you are itching.
5.
Use
sunscreen during times of sun exposure. Vanicream SPF
35 works well.
